how to crochet a Donut

Are you ready for a fun, quirky, and downright delicious project?

Today, we’re diving into the wonderful world of amigurumi to crochet something that’s as sweet as it is mysterious—a Mystery Donut

What makes it a mystery, you ask?

Well, that’s the fun part! This donut has a surprise center, and you’ll only discover what it is once you finish stitching it up.

Let’s roll up our sleeves, grab our hooks, and get started on this yarn-filled adventure!

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Yarn: Choose your favorite donut colors. I’m going with a soft beige for the donut base and a playful pink for the icing. Oh, and don’t forget a contrasting color for sprinkles!
  • Crochet Hook: I’m using a 3.5mm (E) hook, but feel free to use whatever works best with your yarn.
  • Fiberfill Stuffing: To give your donut that perfect puff.
  • Mystery Center: This is where your creativity shines! Use a small toy, a bell, a scented sachet—whatever surprise you want your donut to hold.
  • Stitch Marker: To keep track of your rounds.
  • Tapestry Needle: For weaving in those pesky ends.

Abbreviations:

  • ch: Chain
  • sc: Single Crochet
  • inc: Increase (2 sc in one stitch)
  • dec: Decrease (sc two stitches together)
  • sl st: Slip Stitch

Let’s Get Hooking!

Step 1: Start with the Donut Base

  1. Magic Ring: Start with a magic ring (because we love a neat center, don’t we?).
  2. Round 1: 6 sc into the ring. (6 stitches)
  3. Round 2: Inc in each stitch around. (12 stitches)
  4. Round 3: 1 sc, inc repeat around. (18 stitches)
  5. Round 4: 2 sc, inc repeat around. (24 stitches)
  6. Round 5: 3 sc, inc repeat around. (30 stitches)

Keep increasing in this manner until your donut reaches the desired width (mine is about 42 stitches around). This is where your donut starts to take shape!

Step 2: Building the Icing (aka the Best Part)

  1. Once you’ve reached your desired width, switch to your icing color.
  2. Round 1: sc in each stitch around.
  3. Round 2-3: Continue to sc around to create a bit of height for the icing.
  4. Round 4: Let’s add some texture! Work 1 sc, 1 sl st around for a wavy, drippy icing effect.

Step 3: The Surprise Inside Before we close up our donut, it’s time to add the mystery! Place your secret item inside the donut’s center. I’m using a little bell to make it jingle—what about you?

Step 4: Stuff and Stitch

  1. Start decreasing to close up the donut. Work sc 3, dec around.
  2. Continue decreasing with sc 2, dec and so on until the hole is small enough.
  3. Stuff the donut as you go to keep it nice and fluffy.
  4. Once it’s closed, fasten off and weave in the ends.

Step 5: Sprinkles Time! Use your contrasting yarn to sew tiny sprinkles onto the icing. Get creative! You can go classic rainbow, monochrome chic, or even add some beads for extra sparkle.
